July 20, 1922 — April 28, 2016
Jim was the first born son, to Julis Palmer and Louise Barnhill Fields, in Halifax County, North Carolina, on July 20, 1922. He lived until April 28, 2016, he was 93 years old. After high school, he spent three years in the U.S. Coast Guard serving our country in the South Pacific Seas. Upon return to the U.S., he was trained as a Plumber and Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Specialist.
In 1948, he married Berta Irene Kirkpatrick, in Globe, Arizona, and had two daughters, Patsy Marlene Sullivan and Rebecca Darlene Johnson. Work adventures eventually settled Jim on the West coast, in San Jose, California, after a little time living in Virginia and Texas. He spent 28 years working for the San Jose Unified School District and retired, after being in the role of Plumbing Foreman, at the age of 58. At the time of his death, he had participated in the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the U.S. for a little over 68 years.
Like most, retirement brought many days of enjoyment as he lived in Bend, Oregon, for 21 years with Berta; most of the years in Bend were spent as “Snow Birds” between Bend and Parker, Arizona. After the death of Berta (2004), Jim remarried in 2005, to Mariana Zupo Fields and settled in St. George, Utah. Living in the country, in Diamond Valley, taking care of his chickens, soaking up the sun, and daily outings to town were some of the many great shared adventures for him and Mariana. Jim’s interests included woodworking, fishing, adventures in his motorhome, and a hearty breakfast. Jim was known by many as the man that could “fix it.” At the time of Jim’s death, he was surrounded by the family that loved him and wished there could be a lot more time together.
Jim is survived by Mariana Zupo Fields (Spouse), his daughters: Patsy Marlene Sullivan (Jerry C. Sullivan) of Coarsegold, California, and Rebecca Darlene Johnson (Ralph E. Johnson) of Battle Ground, Washington; step-son, Danny Zupo (Linda Kelly Zupo) of St. George, Utah; brother, Milton Palmer Fields (Leatrice Fields), of Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
Surviving grandchildren include: Michael Sullivan (Connie Boudreault), Michelle Sullivan-Phillips (Brandon Phillips), Chacie Johnson, and Tammy Stokke and his late grandson, Keith Sullivan; great-grandchildren include: Joshua Sullivan, Nichole de Los Reyes, Haley Phillips, Maurica Garcia, Chanelle Parker, Bryanna Sullivan and Logan Stokke; and great-great grandchildren: Jack Fletcher, Jaiden Garcia, and the late Layla Parker.
