HURRICANE – A brush fire near state Route 9 in Hurricane Thursday afternoon closed one lane of traffic but was quickly put out by firefighters.
Officers responded to the fire at about 2:12 p.m. in the area between 3400 West and 3700 West, Hurricane Police Sgt. Brandon Buell said. The blaze was located in the brush on the north side of the road.
“Officers closed down the outside travel lane on state Route 9, and (the fire department) responded and put the fire out,” Buell said.
It’s unknown what started the small fire, Hurricane Fire Department Battalion Chief Merlin Spendlove said, although it might have been someone dragging a chain on a vehicle, or a lit cigarette.
“Looks like we’re going to have a good chance for a good fire season,” Spendlove said. The fire burned about a quarter-acre and was extinguished in about 15 minutes.
“We did have 12 mph south winds at the time,” Spendlove said.
Hurricane Police officers responded to the blaze, along with a brush truck and an engine from the Hurricane Fire Department.
