American Red Cross honors Southern Utah’s everyday heroes

SOUTHERN UTAH — It’s that time of year when the American Red Cross recognizes everyday heroes: ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

This beloved annual Red Cross series of events honors Utahns all across the state who have demonstrated heroic courage, compassion or service.  Attendees to the event will meet these heroes and hear their amazing and inspiring stories.

The Southern Utah event is Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, 1731 S. Convention Center Drive in St. George.

Below are this year’s award recipients:

Lifetime Achievement:  Lamont Smith

  • Retired Kane County Sheriff | Smith is being honored for his lifetime of service

Community Impact:  Sid Young

  • Local psychologist | Young is being honored for counseling a grief stricken community after a flood claims lives

Community Service:  LuAnn Lundquist

  • Alzheimer’s and Dementia Society Founder Lundquist will be recognized for her dedication

Family Hero:  Autumn Shipp and Britt Shipp

  • This brother and sister duo are being honored for inspiring one another and impacting the community as a result

First Responder:  Daniel Nelson

  • Santa Clara Fire Chief | Nelson is being honored for risking his life on a busy freeway to save others

Good Samaritan:  Michael Kartchner

  • Devoted Red Cross Volunteer | Kartchner will be honored for his response to local and national disasters

Military:  Johnnie Johnson  

  • Vietnam Veteran | Johnson makes and donates wood products to local organizations

Preparedness:  Julie Meron

  • Utah Emergency Animal Response Leader | Meron prepares the community for disasters

Youth/Young Adult:  Aryn Feickert

  • Dixie State University star athlete guides community support.
