Our beloved mother and grandmother Jane Marguerite Fairservis Smith, age 80, passed away on March 18, 2016, in St. George, Utah. She was born October 15, 1935, in South Hampton, Long Island, New York, to Donald William and Lola Louise Willis Fairservis. After the passing of her mother in 1947, Jane was raised in Bridgehampton, New York, by her paternal grandmother Jenny Stark Fairservis.
Upon finishing high school, Jane worked for Bell Telephone as a PBX operator. Shortly thereafter, she moved to New York City to work at The New Yorker magazine to use her artistic talents working in advertising and layout. Before long, she met the love of her life, Raymond David Smith, an airman stationed on Long Island; and everything changed. Instead of a glamorous job in NYC, they married and moved to Wyoming where they prospected for uranium, caught wild horses and had the first three of their 11 children.
After Wyoming, she and Ray moved to Oklahoma, where they completed their family. Together they built Smithfair Design and Engineering Company. In 1977, Ray passed away, and Jane was left a widow with 10 children to raise. Seeking opportunity, she moved her family to Bayfield, Colorado and St. George, Utah, which became their permanent home. She used her many talents and strong work ethic to feed and clothe her family, including owning the Jenny D
restaurant in Bayfield.
Jane was an artist, poet, writer, calligrapher, business owner, inspirational speaker, leader, teacher, sweetheart, mother, grandmother and friend to all. Additionally, she dedicated her life to her family and God; and was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She is survived by Raymond Smith, Glee (Rance) Spurlock, Kristi (Keith) Heideman, Charlie (Brad) Orsburn, Janvier Armijo, Derrick (Corie) Smith, Cleve (Jacqueline) Smith, Saskia (Rick) Snyder, Nicholas (Amanda) Smith, Brooke (David) Rigaud and Pride (Liz) Smith and 84 grand and great grandchildren.
