Region 9 softball goes 9-1 on last day of March Warmup

ST. GEORGE – Region 9 teams dominated in the final day of action in the March Warmup at St. George’s Canyon Softball Complex. The four teams went a combined 9-1, including the first two wins for Dixie. Region 9 teams are a combined 32-21-1 against non-region teams for a 60 percent winning percentage. Below is a breakdown of Saturday’s action:

Against Skyline, the Lady Thunder put up 16 runs in the first inning. In all, seven players recorded multiple hits in just three innings. The team totaled 17 hits for the game. Megan Wiscombe had a double and a home run and batted in five runs. Sophie Wilcox got the win in the circle. Wiscombe pitched in relief and struck out 2 of the 3 batters she faced.

Brianna St. Clair pitched a complete game against the Lady Beavers, striking out 15. Wilcox was 2 for 4 at the plate with three RBIs, including a 2-run single in the fourth inning to break the scoreless tie. Dalys Coil homered for the Lady Thunder for her first of the year. Desert Hills scored all seven of its runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Against Boulder City, a Nevada powerhouse, DH rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh inning to come away with the win.

Briann St. Clair pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts. Kodi Salisbury, Morgynn Rosemeyer, and Shyann Reynolds all had extra base hits in the win.

The Lady Thunder have won nine straight heading into region play and improve to 10-2. They will start region play on the road at Cedar Tuesday afternoon. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Hurricane 16, Morgan 7
Hurricane 14, Highland 2 (5 innings)
South Summit 9, Hurricane 2

Against the Trojans, the Lady Tigers were looking at a 7-0 deficit after three innings. But the defense stiffened and Hurricane tied the game 7-7 by the end of the sixth inning. HHS then shellacked the Lady Trojans in the seventh by putting up nine runs to secure the victory.

Savannah Garner got the win in relief pitching the last two innings. Garner also had a good game at the plate hitting 4 for 5 and getting four RBIs. Jayden Smith hit 3 for 4 including a home run.

Against Highland the Lady Tigers put up six runs in the first inning and another five in the third. The Lady Rams got two across in the fourth inning. But the Tiger offense put up three more in the fifth to get the mercy-rule win. Garner and Hayley Teta combined to pitch the five innings. Teta picked up the win in relief. Four Lady Tigers had multiple hits, led by Teta with three. Teta, Garner and Morgan Huntsman each had a double. Kolea Paleka led Hurricane with three RBIs.

“We have hit the ball really well this weekend,” HHS coach Gordon Dotson said. “We’re hoping that continues as we head into region play.”

The Tigers improve to 7-3. They will start Region 9 action at Snow Canyon on Tuesday. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

Pine View 10, North Sevier 8
Pine View 16, Duchesne 2 (5 innings)

Pine View had to claw back into the game against North Sevier. Facing a 5-2 deficit going into the fourth inning, the Lady Panthers put up four runs. The Lady Wolves tied the game with a run in the bottom of the inning.

pine-view-logoPine View then held NSHS scoreless over the next two innings while scoring three. North Sevier made it interesting in the final inning by scoring two runs, but eventually fell 10-8.

Addi Horspool pitched four innings and struck out six. Abby Nielsen pitched in relief and got the win, striking out three. Horspool also led the Panthers with three hits and two RBIs. Aubry Nielson also had three hits.

Jordan Gosik pitched a complete game against Duchesne, striking out nine. Gosik, Syd McArthur and Nielson had multiple hits in the game. Gosik also led the team with four RBIs. The game stayed close with Pine View ahead 5-2 going into the fifth inning. Pine View then exploded with 11 runs to mercy-rule the Lady Eagles.

Pine View moves to 5-3 with the two wins, having won four in a row. The Panthers will face Dixie on Tuesday. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Dixie 15, Altamont 1
Dixie 9, Page (AZ) 1

Dixie won its first two games of the season in the last two games of the March Warmup. In the first game, Kylee Mills struck out 10 batters.

dixie-logoMills also pitched the second game with little rest. Brittany Grob and Hannah Nyberg both went 5 for 6 on the day with three RBIs each. Tanner Western also batted well with an extra-base hit (double) and four RBIs.

Dixie improves to 2-8. The Lady Flyers will travel to Pine View on Tuesday for their first region game. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
