ST.GEORGE— Illustrator and writer team of Nate Taylor and Pat Johnson will present a public lecture Tuesday on “Comics and Collaboration” at Dixie State University’s weekly forum “A Window on the World.”
“Dixie Forum: A Window on the World” is offered Tuesdays from noon to 12:50 p.m. in the Dunford Auditorium in the Browning Resource Center on the DSU campus. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
Taylor and Johnson are both Washington State University graduates, friends and creative collaborators will speak on collaboration, artistic processes, back-stories, current projects and entrepreneurial experience. They plan to invite questions and promise amusing stories, although they have jokingly assured that laughter will not be required.
The comic duo created their own web comic, “Coming Distractions.” In the beginning, the story revolved around theater workers who love movies and hate customers. But what began as satire of modern movies quickly became their figurative sandbox for playing with wild ideas.
Over a seven-year period, the two created 121 strips without an audience in mind. Once the story reached its end, however, they decided to push for publication and published the entire collection in 2014 with the help of a Kickstarter campaign.
Dixie Forum is a weekly lecture series designed to introduce the St. George and DSU communities to diverse ideas and personalities through which they may widen their worldview. Next week, Dixie Forum will have guest Amos Kennedy offer the presentation “Typography, Printmaking, and Graphic Design.”
