News short: Bovine intervention on roadway causes collision

WASHINGTON CITY — Occasionally reports of vehicles hitting deer on the Interstate or on a county road make the news. Sometimes cows also get in the mix, as one did on Washington Fields Road Monday night.

A woman driving a passenger car north on Washington Fields Road between East 1500 South and Indian Springs Drive collided with a cow in the roadway around 6:45 p.m., said Ed Kantor, public information officer for the Washington City Police Department.

“At that time it was lower light, a dark-colored cow, and the car hit the cow,” he said.

The driver was unharmed in the collision, Kantor said, though her car wasn’t so lucky. The front of the car was damaged and required towing from the scene.

The owner of the cow was contacted and the cow was subsequently removed. As for the condition of the cow, Kantor was unable to confirm if it had survived the collision or not. Depending on the circumstances, he said, the owner may likely put the animal down if it was still alive yet injured.

No citations were given as the incident is still being followed up on by police.

Sometimes cows just manage to escape and get into trouble, Kantor said.

While part of the Washington Fields area has gradually become more urban over the years, other parts remain heavily agricultural and still host livestock.

“There are still some areas like that in the city, especially in the ‘Fields’ area,” he said.
