SUV gets crunched when driver fails to yield, turning left into church

ST. GEORGE — A collision between a silver Volkswagen Tiguan SUV and a silver Toyota Tacoma pickup truck inflicted heavy damage on both vehicles Friday evening. The Volkswagen sustained severe damage to its front end, while the Toyota was damaged on the passenger side.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a man, was traveling West on 100 North while the driver of the Toyota, also a man, was traveling East on 100 North and attempting a left-hand turn into the parking lot of the meeting house for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, St. George Police Sgt. Wade Johnson said. The Volkswagen struck the Toyota in the passenger-side door area.

“The (driver of the) Toyota truck thought he had room to turn and he did not,” Johnson said. “So he made a left-hand turn and the SUV crashed into the side of him.”

The driver of the Toyota was cited for failure to yield prior to a left turn.

No injuries were reported. Airbags were deployed on both vehicles.

Both the Volkswagen and the Toyota were towed from the scene, Johnson said.

St. George Police Department responded to the incident.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
