Tie down that reindeer; high wind, winter weather advisories issued

SOUTHERN UTAH – A “High Wind Warning” has been issued for Washington County with gusts expected to exceed 60 mph, and a Winter Weather Advisory has been extended for several Southern Utah counties.

The Winter Weather Advisory for Iron, Beaver, Garfield, Millard and Piute counties has been extended until 10 p.m. Friday. The advisory is for snow, heavy at times, impacting travel through southwest and west-central Utah, especially the Interstate 15 corridor.

A Winter Weather Advisory for Washington, Kane and Garfield counties has been cancelled, however, motorists should still use caution, especially after sunset when icy spots may redevelop.

High wind warning

A High Wind Warning is in effect from 8 p.m. Friday through 4 a.m. Sunday for Washington County and Zion National Park.

Affected area

Utah’s Dixie including the Interstate 15 corridor from Washington City to the Iron County line and along the Pine Valley, Bull Valley and Beaver Dam mountains. This warning does not include the City of St. George.

Winds

Northeast 30-40 mph with gusts exceeding 60 mph especially late Friday night into early Saturday morning, and again early Saturday night.

Impacts

These strong winds may cause hazardous driving contitions especially for high profile vehicles and those with trailers. Strong crosswinds will affect mainly east-west routes. Residents in teh warning area should store any loose outdoor decorations that may become airborne in strong winds. Wind sensitive operations will be affected.

Precautionary/preparedness actions

A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected or is occurring. Sustained wind speeds of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.

Vehicles, especially high profile vehicles, can be difficult to control at times in high winds. Motorists should take extra caution especially while crossing bridges, overpasses and unsheltered areas.
