ST. GEORGE — Three accidents that occurred in a relatively short time in St. George Monday night all had one thing in common: rear-end collisions.
Around 5:30 p.m., a three-car accident happened on Bluff Street in the area of 700 North, when a Cadillac ATS was stopped at a red light, followed by a Toyota Rav4, St. George Sgt. Spencer Holmes said. Following behind those two cars was a Chevrolet Cruze that didn’t stop. The Cruze hit the Rav4, which then hit the Cadillac.
“Just your basic accordion,” Holmes said.
The driver of the Cruze, a 19 year-old woman, told police she was looking down to adjust her radio when the accident occurred. She was subsequently cited for following too close.
St. George Fire and Gold Cross Ambulance also responded to the scene, though no one ended up being taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Traffic on Bluff Street was slowed as motorists had to move around the accident due to stalled vehicles on the roadway. They were ultimately towed from the scene.
Aiding in directing traffic around the accident was Todd Abbott, of the Utah Department of Transportation, Holmes said. Holmes credited Abbott with helping to keep responders at the scene safe from potentially inattentive drivers.
While the Bluff Street accident was wrapping up, another three-car accident occurred on St. George Boulevard, Holmes said. While that was being tended to, a two-car accident occurred in the same area.
Both accidents were triggered by one vehicle rear-ending another, Holmes said. As with the Bluff Street accident, no one was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
