Ice, sun combine to blind driver; truck lands on boulder

A truck went off the road and onto a boulder in Santa Clara Thursday morning when the driver's view was compromised by ice on the windshield combined with glare from the sun, Santa Clara, Utah, Dec. 17, 2015 | Photo by Julie Applegate, St. George News

SANTA CLARA – A single-vehicle accident Thursday morning was caused by a combination of ice and sun glare on a windshield.

An 18-year-old woman was driving east on North Rachel Drive in Santa Clara, near the intersection of Rachel Drive and Paradise Village Drive, at about 8:15 a.m., Santa Clara-Ivins Police Officer Chad Holt said.

“She had some ice on her windshield … and the sun was in her eyes,” Holt said. “She just went off the road and jumped the curb.”

The Ford Ranger struck some landscaping boulders, damaging the front of the truck and causing the airbags to deploy. The Ford Ranger had to be towed from the scene.

Although an ambulance was called, the woman refused medical transport.

“When you wake up in the morning and there’s ice on your windshield, make sure you get all of it off,” Holt said. “Don’t leave any haze on there because when the sun hits it … it can blind you and you can’t even see out of your windshield. Make sure you get all of it off.”

Santa Clara-Ivins Police responded to the incident, along with Santa Clara Fire Department and Ivins City EMS.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

She’s better get a ticket for “failure to maintain lane” and “driving with obstructed view”. That boulder could have been a child.
