HURRICANE — Reagan Hinton and Landon Barker scored 15 points each and the Hurricane Tigers shot 57 percent from the floor in a 67-62 win over Richfield Wednesday night at the Tiger’s Den.
Kirt McDaniel added 12 points and four assists for Hurricane, which has won three in a row after a one-point loss to Canyon View to open the season.
The Tigers were out-rebounded 25-15, but made up for the disparity by shooting lights out. Hurricane was 21 of 37 from the floor and 12 of 19 from 3-point territory. Barker had four of those treys and all nine of Jackson Last’s points came on made 3-pointers.
It was a tight contest throughout, with the Wildcats holding a 29-27 halftime advantage. Hurricane grabbed the lead early in the third on a three-point play by Hinton that made it 30-29, with the lead see-sawing back and forth from there until late in the third.
With Richfield leading 38-37, the Tigers reeled off six straight on back to back 3s by Barker and Last, making it 43-38 with two minutes to go in the third. A basket by RHS’s Porter Robinson cut it to 43-40 a moment later, but Jack Stevenson hit a trey for the Tigers to give them their biggest lead of the night to that point at 46-40 with under a minute left in the third.
In the fourth quarter, Richfield rallied to within 49-48 with about five minutes left on a free throw by Matthew Griffin, but Hinton quickly pushed it out to 51-48 on a pair of free throws.
The Tigers briefly led by seven at 59-52 on another Barker trey with 3:09 to play. Richfield rallied and pulled to within 60-58 after a pair of 3-pointers by Jaylon Steck. Once again, Hurricane looked to senior post Hinton, who responded with a bucket inside with 1:38 to play. A pair of McDaniel free throws then iced it after a Richfield miss and the win was secure for HHS.
Hurricane, 3-1, will play three games this weekend in the Coach Walker Classic. Thursday is a late 9:30 p.m. tip against 4A Viewmont at Dixie State’s Burns Arena. Friday, the Tigers battle Manti at 5 p.m. Saturday, Hurricane will play at 1 p.m. against Springville with the both of those games taking place at DSU’s Old Gymnasium.
Richfield, which got 20 points from Steck and 15 from Stetson Southwick, fell to 6-3 with the loss.
