CEDAR CITY – Residents may awaken Saturday to the sound of sirens on Interstate 15 and Main Street in Cedar City, but don’t worry it’s only the police, fire fighters and EMS workers headed to breakfast with 100 kids and then to do a little shopping.
All part of the “Shop with a Cop” program, the event allows underprivileged children to spend a fun-filled morning with local law enforcement and volunteers.
Prior to shopping, children enjoy a breakfast at Canyon View High School where ladies from the Elk Lodge get together and cook up some pancakes for the group. From there they head to Wal-Mart where the children are first met with a visit from Santa Claus. Next they go inside where police and volunteers take them on a shopping spree and allow them to spend around $100 on gifts for themselves or family.
The “Shop with a Cop” program is organized every year by the Cedar City Police Department and is funded with private donations and various “Tip a Cop” events where public safety officials volunteer to wait tables in restaurants around town and then donate all proceeds to this annual event, all with the goal of making 100 children happy at Christmastime.
