Just after 8:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to a reported accident in the intersection of Santa Clara Drive and Lava Flow Drive and found one maroon pickup truck in the middle of the intersection completely disabled.  The second truck, a silver Chevy S-10 pickup, was in the eastbound lane of Santa Clara Drive facing the opposite direction, Santa Clara Police Department Officer Jon Ward said.

The silver truck was traveling eastbound on Santa Clara Drive as the maroon truck traveled westbound.  Approaching the intersection, the trucks collided as the silver truck attempted to make a left-hand turn on Lava Flow Drive heading south, Ward said.

The driver of the silver truck sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital in a private vehicle.  The driver of the maroon pickup was uninjured and refused medical treatment.

Santa Clara Fire Department Chief Dan Nelson took command while first responders tended to the drivers and the scene.

An event for the City of Santa Clara had just ended, so many people were returning home. People were also leaving an activity that took place at a nearby school, making traffic particularly heavy, Santa Clara Fire Department Chief Dan Nelson said.

“It’s a very busy intersection and traffic is a big concern,” Nelson said. “We need to keep our responders safe and the people involved in the accident safe.”

Both trucks suffered extensive damage and were towed from the scene.

Traffic was blocked by the accident initially and remained congested for approximately 30 minutes.

No citations were issued at the time of this report, as the incident is still under investigation

Santa Clara Police Department, Santa Clara Fire Department, and Ivins City Ambulance responded to the scene.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
