ST. GEORGE — A man driving a moped was transported to the hospital after attempting to avoid a collision when a driver turned directly in front of him on South River Road in St. George Tuesday night.

Just after 8:30 p.m. a man driving a moped, or motor scooter, northbound on South River Road was injured when a man in a white Geo Tracker failed to yield before making a left-hand turn onto 2450 South, St. George Police Sgt. Spencer Holmes said.

The driver of the moped saw the SUV making the turn in front of him, and trying to avoid a collision he laid the moped on its side, Holmes said. The rider crashed into the roadway instead of hitting the other vehicle, he said.

Emergency personnel were just finishing up another call in the immediate area and responded to the scene in less than a minute, Holmes said.

Once responders arrived on, the man was quickly transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George to be treated for his injuries, Holmes said, but the extent of those injuries is unknown at the time of this report.

“Luckily the man was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident or his injuries could have been much worse,” Holmes said.

The driver of the Tracker remained on scene as emergency personnel tended to the injured moped rider.  The Tracker driver was uninjured and was later cited for failing to yield on a left turn, Holmes said.

The moped suffered extensive damage from hitting the roadway and was inoperable.

St. George Fire and Police departments and Gold Cross Ambulance responded.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
