James Marion Mayfield

Mayfield, James YOctober 14, 1929 – November 22, 2015

James Marion Mayfield, age 86, passed away Nov. 22, 2015, in St. George, Utah. He was born Oct. 14, 1929, in Farmington, Utah, to William Marion and Hazel Smith Mayfield. He married Dorothy Ann McGaffey Nov. 21, 1949, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

He was raised in Salt Lake City until the age of 11, then he spent most of his life in Southern California. He graduated from Pomona High School, at which time he joined the Coast Guard. He met his sweetheart, Dorothy McGaffey, in high school.

In his early years, he was a truck driver, rancher, apprentice for Combee Electric and then was hired as an electrician at Minnesota Mining. He worked for many years as an electrician and eventually opened Mayfield Electric.

His passion in life was camping with his wife and children, coaching his boy’s baseball teams and serving as a Seventy and Ward Mission Leader in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as an ordinance worker in the Los Angeles Temple for 15 years.

James is survived by his wife, Dorothy Mayfield of St. George, Utah; children Ron Mayfield (Debbie) of Washington, Utah, Cathye Huckaby (Clay) of St. George, Utah, Don Mayfield (Ann) of Washington, Utah; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Jeanette Burton of Fresno, California.

He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Larry Mayfield; sister, Louise Kendell; and brothers, Bill Mayfield and Pat Mayfield.

Funeral services

  • Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 28, 3:30 p.m., in the Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George, Utah.
  • Viewing will be prior to services, 2-3 p.m.
  • Interment will be in the Tonaquint Cemetery, St. George, Utah.
