Jubilee of Trees set to benefit Dixie Regional’s trauma care, neurosciences

ST. GEORGE – The 2015 Jubilee of Trees gets underway this week at the Dixie Center St. George. The annual auction of designer Christmas trees takes place over five days and serves as a fundraiser for Dixie Regional Medical Center. Proceeds from this year’s Jubilee, sponsored by the Intermountain Foundation, will go toward the advancement of trauma care and neurosciences at the facility.

Dixie Regional is currently undergoing an upgrade of its trauma center from a Level III to a Level II designation. The increased level of care will include round-the-clock specialized treatment for critical injuries and immediate specialty care, including orthopedic surgery, emergency medicine and neurosurgery. Prior to this change, patients with severe trauma were transported to medical facilities outside of Southern Utah.

“We don’t always have the luxury of time to get these patients to another facility,” said Dr. Benjamin Fox, medical director for neurosurgery at Intermountain Healthcare and medical director for neurointerventional services at Dixie Regional. He is based at the Southern Utah Neurosciences Institute in St. George.

“It is amazing to have state-of-the-art equipment, skilled physicians and surgeons, and rehabilitation therapists available 24/7 right here in Dixie,” Fox said. “You never know when you or someone you love is going to need these lifesaving services.”

Funds raised will be used to purchase an interoperative MRI – imaging equipment that can be used in the operating theater, Glenna Beyer, chief development officer for the foundation, said.

The festivities begin Wednesday with a performance by the Bar J Wranglers. A full slate of holiday events, including the annual “Gala Dinner and Auction,” “Teddy Bear Picnic,” “Holiday Concert” and “Fashion Show Luncheon” will be complemented by the sale of handmade gifts created by the Dixie Regional Guild. Traditional homemade treats of gingerbread and other holiday sweets will be available. The final night of the Jubilee will feature a “Family Fun Night” for the general public.

The main attraction will continue to be the designer trees. Also included with general admission will be the Enchanted Forest display of smaller trees, holiday wreaths and festive dining displays.

“The Jubilee’s a tradition – a long-standing tradition in this community. We want everybody to be a part of it,” Beyer said. “There’s activities that will go on all week long that people can come to hear music and entertainment that just costs your admission fee to get in. You can also bid on the trees or buy a wreath or have your picture taken with Santa Claus.”
