Hot coals thrown in trash suspected cause of mobile home fire

WASHINGTON CITY – Despite heavy rain Sunday evening, a fire broke out in a Washington City mobile home after a resident reportedly placed hot coals in a plastic garbage can.

Around 8:45 p.m., fire crews responded to a fire on the 200 East block of Telegraph Street in Washington after it was reported that flames and smoke were seen coming from the attic of the home, Washington City Firefighter Thomas Webster said.

First responders entered the home and began extinguishing the fire with a “quick knockdown,” Webster said.

Firefighters pulled down part of the ceiling toward the rear of the mobile home and found minimal spreading of the fire, Webster said. Once the flames were knocked out, they were able to ensure that all smoldering spots were extinguished as well.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire, Webster said, and the home sustained only minimal damage to the interior of the residence, including some water damage.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Webster said one of the residents reported they had thrown hot coals in a plastic trash can located directly outside of the mobile home. Firefighters later located the melted trash can near the rear of the residence.

“This is a good reminder for people, you know, the winter months are coming around,” Webster said. “Be careful where you put the coals. Don’t put them in the garbage cans that are plastics. Make sure you put them in a metal garbage can and away from the home if you can. And make sure they’re completely out when you put them out. Otherwise, things like this can happen.”

Washington City Police and Washington City Fire Department responded to the scene.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
