Community members step out to end Alzheimer’s

ST. GEORGE – The 2015 “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” will take place Saturday morning at Tonaquint Park in St. George, covering 2 miles to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

Registration for the event will take place at 9 a.m. at Tonaquint Park. There will be a ceremony at 10 a.m., and the walk will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association, the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. The event is held in more than 600 communities nationwide.

Alzheimer’s Association “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” participants will learn more about Alzheimer’s disease, advocacy opportunities, caregiver support programs and services. Walk participants also honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease with the “Promise Garden” ceremony.

“Walk to End Alzheimer’s” supports the Alzheimer’s Association’s mission to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research and to provide and enhance care and support for all affected.

Some state and national Alzheimer’s statistics include:

  • There are 29,000 people living with Alzheimer’s here in Utah
  • There are 142,000 caregivers giving 162 million hours of unpaid care
  • Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States
  • One in three seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia
  • Alzheimer’s is the only cause of death among the top 10 in America that cannot be prevented, slowed or even cured
