May 26, 1932 – November 10, 2015
Mary Ida Cates, 83, of St. George, (formerly of Roy) stepped into God’s presence in the early morning hours of November 10, 2015, at the Kolob Rehab Facility. Mary was born on May 26, 1932, in Bloomfield, New Mexico, to John F. and Filomena Nickerson. She was the only daughter in a family of six brothers.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 30 years Sidney A. Cates, and three older brothers.
Ida and Sid did not have any biological children of their own, but chose to use their parenting skills into their many nieces and nephews. Mary is survived by brothers, Frank (Elsie) Nickerson, David Nickerson all from Layton and her youngest brother, Orlando (Rosemary) Nickerson of St. George.
Ida and her husband Sid were devoted followers of Christ and gave themselves to a ministry of feeding and clothing the homeless and the poor. They also provided financial assistance to many in need. Their faith in the living Savior was demonstrated in deeds of love and compassion, no one in need was ever turned away.
Ida was a great loving sister, aunt, and friend that anyone could ask for. Her greatest asset was her love for God and never becoming sidetracked with any ritual or routine that didn’t honor God. We will miss you our dear sister, but we are celebrating because you are now in God’s presence and have heard His awesome voice saying, “well done thou good and faithful servant enter now into your rest”. Surely your cup runneth over.
