ST. GEORGE – Hundreds of high school rodeo competitors will converge at the fairgrounds at Washington County Regional Park in Hurricane this month for three weekends of rodeo action. Competition begins Friday. The Dixie Six Rodeo will welcome high school rodeo riders from around the state as the Utah High School Rodeo Association wraps up its fall schedule.
The Dixie Six Rodeo is hosted by the Dixie Rodeo Club of the UHSRA, a group of more than 40 local high school rodeo riders.
Students will show off their talents in bareback, saddle bronc, bull riding, team roping, steer wrestling, barrels, breakaway, poles, goats, tie-down roping and shooting. There will be a weekly rodeo queen competition and a “Cowboy Prom.”
More than 400 competitors are expected for this year’s event, including 149 barrel racers. Last year’s Dixie Six barrel racing competitors, McKenna McAllister and Kaytlyn Miller, went on to finish first and second in the 2015 National High School Rodeo, according to an announcement from the Dixie Rodeo Club. McAllister is currently ranked seventh in the state standings. Miller is ranked ninth.
A new event, reining cow horse, has been added and will start with the cutting horse Friday mornings at 8 a.m. all three weeks of the rodeo.
“It’s just a great sport for these kids and families to come be together and to support one another,” Amanda McAllister, club secretary, said. “It takes a lot of work for these kids to get to this place with their horses.”
Rodeo fans are invited to come and share in the excitement.
“For great entertainment, come out and support the kids and see what these kids work for all year long,” McAllister said.
UHSRA competition resumes in the spring, starting with the Spikers Club Rodeo in Ogden. UHSRA finals will be held in Heber City June 1-4.
