ST. GEORGE – Dixie State was overwhelmed by the visiting nationally-ranked Humboldt State Lumberjacks 57-14 Saturday night.

dsulogohsu“They are a better team,” said Dixie State head coach Scott Brumfield. “We have a tough conference with good teams. We go to Central Washington next week with a chance to finish 3-3.”

The Lumberjacks took away much of what the Dixie State offense wanted to do in the first half. DSU trailed 40-0 at halftime.

“They scouted our game last week against South Dakota,” said Brumfield. “They had two guys that were spying (quarterback Blake) Barney. That shut us down. We made adjustments at halftime and played better in the second half.”

HSU quarterback Robert Webber threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth to pace the Lumberjacks. The HSU defense held Dixie to just over 100 yards of total offense in the first half.

In the second half, the Storm moved the ball more effectively. They finally got on the board on a 7-yard pass from Barney to wide receiver Nate Stephens midway through the third quarter. They added a rushing touchdown from DeJon Coleman in the fourth quarter.

The Storm recognized the seniors on their last home game.

“The seniors on this team that have been here four or five years have sacrificed much for the program,” said Brumfield. “They came when we were not able to give them much aid and helped build the program. I told them that a few years down the road as this program progresses, those teams can thank them for what they started.”

For the game, Barney completed 11 of 21 passes for 127 yards. Nate Stephens had five receptions for 64 yards. Barney also led the team in rushing with 91 yards on 18 carries.

Dixie State will travel to Ellensburg, Washington to take on Central Washington for the last game of the season. Game time is set for noon (Pacific Time).
