Jerry Woodruff Averett, 66, passed away on Tuesday, November 3, 2015. He was born October 15, 1949, in Cedar City, Utah, to Harry Woodruff Averett and Selina Caroline Atkin.

He married Jolene Cox on March 29, 1969. To this union were born two children: Brandon Jerry and Kimberly. Jerry and Jolene were later divorced. He married Judith Lynn Spila Durfee on May 12, 1990, and was a loving father to her children: Jaelin and Tylor Jay. Jerry and Judy later divorced.

Jerry was raised in St. George, Utah, and graduated from Dixie High School. He enjoyed traveling, boating, horses, marksmanship and Kolob Mountain. He was a general contractor for 30 years in the Southern Utah area and was well known for his excellent craftsmanship. He had many good friends and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his foster mother Mary Christensen of Delta, Utah; ex-wife Judy Averett of Hurricane, Utah; children Kimberly Chadwick of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Brandon Averett of Riverton, Utah; and stepchildren Jaelin Durfee Fjermestad (Jason) of Hurricane, Utah, and Tylor Durfee (Monica) of White Earth, North Dakota.

He is also survived by his brothers and sisters James Averett (Jeanelle) of Central, Utah; June Bond (Dennis) and Joyce Jones (Steve-deceased) both of Tacoma, Washington; Wesley Wright (Mary Jo) of Avondale, Arizona; John (Fran) Holt of Tonto Basin, Arizona; and LaDonna Phillips and Mineral Wells, Texas. He leaves behind 13 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services

  • Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. at Spilsbury Mortuary 110 S. Bluff St., St. George.
  • A viewing will be Monday, 12:30-2 p.m. prior to the services at the mortuary.
  • Interment will take place in the Washington City Cemetery following the services.
