High schools host events on applying, paying for college

SOUTHERN UTAH — Events at four local high schools will help parents and students find ways to pay for college, with the first event set for Wednesday evening at Hurricane High School.

Parowan, Canyon View, Cedar City and Hurricane high schools are hosting assemblies and events about applying for and paying for college. The events aim to get information into the hands of the students and parents to help realize their potential for further education.

Southern Utah University president Scott Wyatt will speak at assemblies at Parowan and Canyon View high schools in November.

The assembly for Parowan High School will take place Nov. 16 at 8 a.m., while the assembly for Canyon View High will be Nov. 19 at 8:30 a.m. both with Wyatt speaking about higher education.

Cedar City High School and Hurricane High School are hosting “You CAN Pay for College” events, sponsored by the Utah Higher Education Assistance Authority.  The meetings are Wednesday, from 6-8 p.m., at Hurricane High School and Thursday, from 6-8 p.m., at Cedar City High School.

Elected officials, university presidents and school leaders will be participating in Utah College Application Week, also called UCAW, events across the state. Now in its third year, UCAW is in 25 districts and 84 schools across the state.

UCAW gives every high school senior in participating schools the opportunity to apply to college during the school day, with a particular focus on first generation and low income students, who are less likely to apply to and enroll in college.

“For many students, the college application process can feel overwhelming,” said Utah commissioner of higher education Dave Buhler. “Utah College Application Week events give high school students a helping hand as they complete their applications, as well as guidance and encouragement along the way. We are proud to work with our K-12 partners to bring these events to schools throughout the state.”

In 2014, nearly 11,000 students in 49 high schools participated in UCAW. Of these:

  • 18 percent said they would not have otherwise applied to college
  • 34 percent identified as first generation students
  • 80 percent said that participating in UCAW increased their interest in going to college

And after the students have applied, Utah Higher Education Assistance Authority is stepping in to help students and parents receive information on paying for college. UHEAA is hosting the “You CAN Pay for College” events throughout Utah — even rurally — which are designed to get information into the hands of Utah high school students and their parents.

These events are held in coordination with the Utah Council’s annual College Tour. A full list of events can be found on the Step Up Utah website.
