ST. GEORGE – Multiple mayoral and city council seats across the state are up for grabs this election cycle and will be decided by voters Tuesday.

What follows is a quick reference guide to articles covering the 2015 municipal election covering Washington, Iron and Kane counties, as well as basic information for prospective voters.

In Southern Utah the majority of the races are for seats on town and city councils. The only mayoral race in the region is in Enoch. In other cities, some incumbents have chosen not to seek re-election, opening up the way for new blood, while in other cities, elections have been canceled due to a lack of candidates. Potential challengers either dropped out of the race, or didn’t file for candidacy in the first place.

In St. George, Councilman Gil Almquist did not file for re-election while fellow council members Bette Arial and Jimmie Hughes did. They face challengers Ed Baca, Craig Hammer, Gregg McArthur and Bryan Thiriot. Should the incumbents be re-elected, one of the four challengers will be a new face on the St. George City Council.

The Washington City Council will see two new faces as Councilmen Kress Staheli and Ron Truman also chose not to retain their seats. Two-term incumbent Jeff Turek is seeking a third term and running against challengers Troy Belliston, Brad Allen, Jean Arbuckle, Kolene Granger and Bill Hudson. Both Hudson and Granger are former members of the Washington City Council.

The municipalities of Santa Clara and Kanarraville have both canceled their respective elections due to lack of candidates. According to Fox 13 News, they join over 60 other Utah towns that have done the same by taking advantage of a state law that allows them to do so.

The polls open at 7 a.m., Tuesday, and close at 8 p.m. Voters can find their polling locations via the vote.utah.gov website.

A form of state-recognized identification is requited to be able to vote. This can typically be a driver’s license or a state-issued ID. A list of other forms of ID and documentation acceptable at the polls can be found here.
