IRON COUNTY – An Ivins man heading home from a tile delivery in Panguitch received injuries to his head, lower back and right leg after diving out of his semitruck believing the brakes had gone out on a steep and windy part of the road coming down Cedar Canyon.
A call came into dispatch at 2:44 p.m. to respond to a crash on state Route 14 at milepost 8, Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Nathan Clark said.
The blue Mack truck was the only vehicle involved in the incident, Clark said.
“He believed, as he was taking that last corner, that he had no brakes so he kind of used the emergency brake,” Clark said, “at which point, he made the decision to turn left into the rocks to bring the truck to a stop. And prior to the truck actually hitting the rocks he jumped out.”
The man sustained his injuries when he dove out of the driver’s seat, the trooper said. He was transported by Gold Cross Ambulance to Valley View Medical Center In Cedar City to be treated for his injuries.
A preliminary investigation of the scene revealed no evidence on the road of the brakes being used at all, Clark said, explaining that there were no skid marks or tire tracks to speak of.
There is an ongoing investigation to make the final determination in the cause of the crash, he said. The trooper in charge of the mechanical investigative did find that at least one brake was not working on the delivery truck, Clark said.
In addition to UHP, Gold Cross, Iron County Sheriff’s Office and Utah Department of Transportation also assisted on the scene.
