Car show, carnival aids Project Lifesaver

ST. GEORGE – A celebration to honor our hometown heroes filled Town Square Park Saturday morning. The First Responders Car Show and Halloween Carnival celebrated the men and women who protect our region.

Public safety officers from departments throughout the county were on hand to meet the public while visitors toured the more than 70 classic cars on display. Organizers hope to make the show an annual event.

“For our first year we’re very happy with it,” said Darren Nuttall, director of the event.

Car Guys Care and Desert Sports Management hosted the show which was used to raise awareness about Project Lifesaver, a rapid response system for adults and children at risk. The program provides electronic wristbands to anyone who may wander due to Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, Down syndrome and other such disorders.

“The care provider can call the police and within minutes the police can get the tracking device out and help find them,” Nuttall said.

The program is new to Washington County. Nuttall said 15 children are participating so far and part of the proceeds from the show will go to funding families who have difficulty paying the $300 pricetag for the device.

Shane Dastrup of Car Guys Care has a personal stake in Project Lifesaver. He has a granddaughter with autism.

“I think it’s a tremendous tool for these kids that have neurological problems like autism,” he said. “I’m going to sign up to get one for my granddaughter. I want to be first on the line.”

First responders from the St. George Police Department, St. George Fire Department, Santa Clara-Ivins Police Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Hurricane Police Department, units from the 141st Military Intelligence Battalion and the Second Battalion, and the 222nd Field Artillery of the Utah Army National Guard participated in the event.
