CEDAR CITY – A rear-end collision involving a silver Nissan Sentra and a white Chevy 2500 pickup belonging to the U.S. Forest Service clogged up northbound traffic for nearly 40 minutes Friday afternoon on Main Street in Cedar City, near Valley View Medical Center.
Reports of the accident came into dispatch at 2:58 p.m. Responders were dispatched to the intersection of Main Street and 1325 North, Cedar City Police Officer Norm Stauffer said. Both the Cedar City Police Department and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the scene.
Both vehicles were traveling north in the right lane on Main street when the light changed to red, Stauffer said.
The driver of the Chevy said he was on his way back to town after a long day on the mountain working with fire suppression. He didn’t see the car coming that hit him from behind, he said, but the light had just turned red and he had just completed his stop when it happened.
It was all kind of a blur, the Nissan driver said, but she could remember that traffic was flowing fine and then suddenly she hit the truck in front of her.
“I don’t know,” she said. “I looked out for like a second, and then I thought they were still going and the light had changed and they just stopped.”
Contributing factors in the accident were not known at the time, Stauffer said.
The 18-year-old woman driving the Nissan was alone in the car when the incident occurred, he said. By the looks of the damage, her car will most likely be considered a total loss, Stauffer said.
The entire front end of the Nissan was completely crumpled, and the car had to be towed away from the scene. The Chevy, however, sustained only minor bumper damage and was able to be driven without issue.
The driver of the truck refused medical attention at the scene, but the Nissan driver was examined and determined to have sustained only minor injuries.
Traffic resumed normally once the Nissan was towed away from the scene.
No citations were given in relation to the accident.
