Police arrest alleged shoe store bandit

WASHINGTON CITY – Police caught and arrested a serial shoe thief Tuesday as she was leaving a Washington City store with a purse full of stolen shoes.

Officers responded to Shoe Carnival, 628 W. Telegraph Street, in Washington on a retail theft report where the store manager presented video surveillance footage of a woman, identified as Anita Caterine Pasi, shoplifting shoes on at least five different occasions, according to a probable cause statement filed by the Washington City Police Department in support of the arrest.

In the video footage, Pasi is seen entering the shoe store, selecting several boxes of shoes, taking the shoes out of the box and concealing them in her purse before leaving without paying for them, according to the statement.

Pasi placed display shoes in the empty boxes so no empty boxes would be discovered by store employees.

An employee of the store was able to identify Pasi as the alleged shoe thief, the statement said, and the manager was able to further confirm her identity through her registered Carnival Shoes reward card.

After taking the theft report Tuesday, officers received a call later in the day saying Pasi was back in the shoe store. Police confronted Pasi as she exited the store and asked her about the thefts.

“Anita admitted to stealing shoes 3 times, but stated she paid for some items,” the arresting officer wrote in the statement. “I asked if she had stolen shoes in her bag that she had with her and she stated she did. I opened the bag and found several pairs of stolen shoes.”

Police had store employees ring up the shoes and found they totaled more than $500, according to the statement of probable cause.

Police then obtained permission to search Pasi’s car where they found several other pairs of stolen shoes.

“There were also multiple DVD’s that had tags from Walmart on them,” the officer wrote. “I asked Anita about the DVD’s and she admitted to stealing them from Walmart last Saturday night. In the vehicle there were several pairs of shoes that did not belong to Shoe Carnival. I asked Anita where she had taken those shoes from and she stated from JCPENNYS in St. George.”

Pasi was arrested and booked into the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility.

She was charged with one class A misdemeanor for theft and six class B misdemeanors, also for theft.

Her court arraignment in 5th District Court is scheduled for Monday afternoon.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
