ST. GEORGE – A three-car crash on River Road in St. George Friday evening resulted in one man being taken to the hospital, while about an hour later, across town on Red Hills Parkway, another accident occurred in which one car went off the roadway after hydroplaning. No one was injured in the second incident.
The crashes were only two in a string of accidents that took place during St. George Police Sgt. Rich Triplett’s shift Friday.
During his shift, Triplett said, police units responded to a total of eight accidents across the city.
Crash near Chili’s
Around 6:20 p.m., St. George Police officers and other responders were dispatched to the area of 311 N. River Road in front of the Chili’s Grill & Bar, where three cars had collided.
Prior to the accident, Triplett said, the driver of a white SUV had just left the parking lot in front of Outback Steakhouse, north of Chili’s and across River Road, and turned to go southbound. The driver’s intent was to cross the street and enter the Chili’s parking lot on the other side, Triplett said.
However, after moving into the inside lane – the one closest to the median – the driver did not notice a red passenger car that was already in the outside lane also heading southbound. The SUV driver told police she didn’t see the red car due to it being in her blind spot when she started to move into the outside lane, Triplett said.
The white SUV ended up sideswiping the red passenger car and pushing it into the front driver-side corner of a gold SUV that was stopped at the entrance to the Chili’s parking lot, about to turn right onto River Road.
Following the impact, the driver of the gold SUV complained about having shortness of breath and was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center by Gold Cross Ambulance as a precautionary measure. He didn’t appear to have any visible injuries, Triplett said.
No one else was transported or injured as a result of the accident.
While the white SUV was able to be driven away, the red passenger car and gold SUV were towed.
The outside lane around the entry into Chili’s parking lot was blocked off as responders dealt with the scene.
The driver of the white SUV was cited for improper lane travel.
Red Hills Parkway accident
Shortly after the accident on River Road was cleared up, a passenger car traveling westbound on Red Hills Parkway toward the Bluff Street interchange hit a patch of water and spun out of control, going off the roadway.
Scattered rain had fallen during the evening and left parts of the road with standing water.
The car’s occupants, a male driver and female passenger, were unharmed, Triplett said.
Westbound travel on Red Hills Parkway around the accident was reduced to a single lane while the incident was dealt with.
Traffic in the eastbound lanes was also impacted due to gawkers slowing to catch a glimpse of the crash.
In addition to St. George Police, the St. George Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the incidents.

What’s with all of the daily accidents? Do we need to go back to horses and bicycles? At this rate we will run out of cars and have to resort to what they did before cars. Jeeze.
Looks like a lot of drivers don’t realize they are behind the wheel of a real automobile. They think they are at a carnival driving bumper cars.

Why all the questions about what causes so many accidents? All you have to do is drive around St. George for a couple of hours to know the cause. Jacka$$ drivers texting or on drugs or otherwise paying no attention to what they’re doing and doing it at least 20 miles over the speed limit.
Simple.
The St. George area seems to be home base for the worst drivers ever. And it’s not about more traffic. I’ve lived in cities with much more traffic and many fewer accidents. Nope, it’s just the Jacka$$ gene in action.
Why no names in most of these stories? I could care less if there were 20 accidents in one day as long as no one I knew was in them. If i knew someone then I could reach out to help if I could..
