CEDAR CITY – A California woman was arrested Sunday after Cedar City Police responded to a call from a local hotel that an unregistered woman had allegedly sneaked into a vacant room without paying.
The woman, identified as Kimberly Kiefer, 31, of West Hills, California, was traveling through town with her boyfriend on her way home to California, according a probable cause statement filed in support of her arrest. She tried paying for a room using a credit card number she claimed belonged to her mother, the statement said, but, per hotel policy, it was not accepted because she did not have the physical card for them to run.
Kiefer told police her boyfriend had kicked her out of the car and she had nowhere to go.
After she was turned away by the hotel front office, according to the statement, Kiefer found an open room that was being cleaned by a housekeeper, went in and closed the door behind her.
“Kimberly stated she planned on staying in the room as long as she could,” the statement reported.
After discussing the issue with the hotel manager, Kiefer was transported by Cedar City Police to the Canyon Creek Women’s Crisis Center, according to the statement, because they did not wish to press charges against her but wanted her removed from the property.
After Kiefer avoided arrest the first time, the hotel manager called police a couple of hours later and told them she was back in the room, according to the statement. She was only discovered after the manager opened the door to show the room to a potential guest.
“When I arrived for the second time,” the arresting officer reported in the statement, “I found Kimberly in the room making coffee and sitting around.”
When questioned about why she was back in the room and how she got there, Kiefer told police she did not feel comfortable at the crisis center, the statement said, so she returned to the hotel and entered the room using a key card she had swiped from the desk in the room earlier that day.
Since she had already trespassed once and been given an opportunity to move on without incurring charges, the statement reported, the officer informed Kiefer he would have no choice but to take her into custody.
Kiefer was arrested and charged with two second-degree felony counts for burglary; one class A misdemeanor for criminal trespassing; and three class B misdemeanors for theft, theft of services and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The paraphernalia charge came from an earlier search of Kiefer’s possessions while she was in the hotel room the first time, according to the probable cause statement. The search was reported as being consensual, the statement said, and Kiefer claimed the paraphernalia was used for marijuana.
Kiefer is still incarcerated at the Iron County Jail as this report is published, according to officials, and is being held on $10,000 bondable bail.
According to court documents, a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.

Maybe she thought she could bring her Califphonia values with her to Utah. The poor dear. Wonder why the “boyfriend” kicked her out. Wonder why these are the only choices she could come up with. As for the free room and meals, she could have gotten that from the crisis shelter.
