ST. GEORGE – After seeking the public’s help last month, police identified and arrested a man Tuesday who was allegedly involved in a sexual assault of a vulnerable adult in September.

Detectives were called to investigate a sexual assault case involving a 38-year-old woman with diminished mental capacities. The woman has the mental capacity of a 7-year-old, according to a probable cause statement filed by the St. George Police Department in support of the arrest.

The sexual assault allegedly occurred on Sept. 16 between noon and 2:15 p.m. after the woman had walked away from the St. George care facility where she resides full-time, the statement said. While out walking, the woman said, she was offered a ride by a man driving a tan car.

The woman said the man took her to a store and bought her a soda pop, according to the probable cause statement. The woman told detectives the man then drove her to a park and “had the sex.”

“(The woman) stated that the male had put his penis in her vagina and in her mouth,” the arresting detective wrote in the statement. “The victim said that the male had ejaculated as well during the incident.”

The woman described the man as having a beard and described a tattoo on the man’s right leg.

Detectives were able to collect surveillance footage from the store where the man had allegedly taken the woman to buy a drink. Police then asked the public’s help identifying the man captured in the footage.

Over the course of the investigation, detectives were able to identify 57-year-old Cherokee Miles Williams, of Hurricane, as the suspect in the case.

Detectives conducted an interview with Williams on Tuesday. Williams immediately invoked his rights and requested his attorney, and the interview ended, according to the statement of probable cause.

Williams was arrested and booked into the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility.

He has been charged with two first-degree felony counts of aggravated kidnapping and forcible sodomy, as well as second-degree felony forcible sexual abuse.

His bail for release pending trial stands at $40,000. He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance Thursday afternoon.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.

I don’t even know what to say because I really don’t have the ability to lower my intelligence that many notches. I hope you are a youngster, because you have a lot of learning to do. Good luck!

The details of the sexual crime described in this article in graphic detail are highly inappropriate, warning or no warning. St. George News has violated the privacy of the victim (even without naming her) and has given the public unseemly details that are unwanted and completely unnecessary for reporting the news.

The details are facts as reported. If you can’t stomach the reality of a heinous crime, don’t read the news.

You must have been there right? I feel like your conviction is based on something you witnessed with your own eyes. Maybe it’s just me. That’ll be all.

      • luke_vs_6_37 October 13, 2015 at 7:16 pm

The details are only what the plaintiff said to the police. The only thing factual about it is the fact that the detective wrote down what he heard (Hear Say).

Agree. It is sickening to know that he will see the light of day again, too soon. The court system is not near hard enough on these “people”.

Do you know the details of the situation? You should really find out specifics before condemning somebody to darkness.

kidnapping, sodomy, sexual abuse, and not a rape charge? the guy is obviously a pervert and low life, but it sound like there might have been some consent. and even with “diminished mental capacities” this is a near 40yo woman who can consent, unless there some laws on the books applying to mental retardation and consent laws we’re no aware of. then again all the charges may be legit… oh well

You really don’t get it, scummy, do you? No inkling whatsoever of the extent of the dmc. Then you answer your own presumption, you aren’t aware of some laws. Maybe you could find google and google your presumptions first.

        dmc? elaborate pls, MM

    • luke_vs_6_37 October 13, 2015 at 7:09 pm

How do you know he is a low life? Guess what? He weighs 135 pounds and can hardly walk. Just barely got over 12 years of cancer. There is no possible way that Cherokee, in his physical condition could have forced sexual acts upon anybody. He wouldn’t even have the ability to force her into a car.
