Planned Parenthood funding continues, health department will deliver federal grant monies

ST. GEORGE -Planned Parenthood of Utah will continue receiving federal funds earmarked for reproductive health programs through the end of the year. The Utah Department of Health notified the organization Oct. 1 of its intent to add funding through Dec. 31, 2015.

The move follows a Sept. 29 decision from the U.S. District Court preventing Utah Gov. Gary Herbert from withholding federal dollars from the organization. Herbert announced in August he would no longer allow the state health department to funnel federal grant money to the group. The governor’s order came in reaction to a series of controversial videos released by a California anti-abortion group allegedly showing national Planned Parenthood officials discussing the sale of aborted fetal tissue for scientific research.

“We were pleased that we will continue to receive funding while this matter is in the courts,” said Karrie Galloway, CEO of Planned Parenthood Association of Utah. “As always, we are committed to providing the excellent health care and education that Utahns rely on us for.”

The next hearing in the matter of Planned Parenthood Association of Utah v. Herbert is scheduled for Oct. 15.
