ST. GEORGE — The success of Dixie State University’s 2015 Homecoming Week, Sept. 21-26, was thanks to the entire St. George community who came together to “Rock the Red” and show pride for their university.
Taking the theme for the 2015 festivities literally, the campus did “Rock the Red” as it was decked out with red balloons, streamers and bows. The campus wasn’t the only one beaming with school spirit, though. Thanks to the community’s support, the activities were bigger and better than ever before, a press release said.
“Thank you to all those who helped and supported homecoming,” Director of Student Involvement and Leadership Jordon Sharp said. “Homecoming is a special time at Dixie State University, and we could not do it without all of your support.”
Between the seven athletic events and 18 community events hosted by Dixie State University and its students and alumni, more than 20,000 participants attended the festivities throughout the week. Specifically, more than 1,000 cars parked at the Ridge Top Complex for the drive-in movie, and nearly 3,000 people attended the Homecoming Week tailgate party.
Additionally, the volleyball and men’s soccer teams were undefeated during Homecoming Week as each team competed twice.
The annual Homecoming Parade, hosted Saturday morning along Tabernacle Street, boasted nearly 100 floats and thousands of spectators. As part of the annual tradition, judges evaluated all the floats and awarded prizes to the winners.
Singing and dancing their way into the winner’s circle, Raging Red placed first. Rounding out the top entries, the Physical Therapy Club placed second, Sigma Tau Delta Club ranked third and the Wrestling Club finished fourth.
The marching bands that participated in the parade were judged separately from the floats. In this competition, Dixie High School took high honors. Dixie Middle School finished second, and Pine View Middle School came in third.
The fun will return April 11-16, when Dixie State University hosts “D-Week.”
