ST. GEORGE – A truck powered by compressed natural gas caught fire in St. George Tuesday afternoon, leaving a Ford truck a total loss by the time the fire was out.

At about 5:30 p.m., the St. George Fire Department received a report of a vehicle fire in the area of 900 East Cottonwood Springs Road, Battalion Chief Ken Guard said.

“It was mostly involved by the time we got the call,” Guard said.

Workers from nearby Ruesch Machine, an industrial crane company, tried to put the fire out before the Fire Department arrived.

The compressed natural gas, or CNG, Ford F-15o pickup truck had not had any mechanical issues and had not had any work done recently, Guard said.

The cause of the fire is undetermined as this report is published.

“There was so much damage to the engine compartment, it’s hard to tell,” Guard said.

The truck is a total loss, he said.

The driver of the truck was not injured, and there were no passengers in the vehicle.

Three engines and eight firefighters responded to the blaze, Guard said.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
