Desert-Hills-smPine-view-smAfter winning the first two sets comfortably, 25-10, 25-14, Pine View came back and stole the third set 26-24. The Thunder regrouped to take the fourth set 25-18.

Individually, Rachel Winters led all players with 20 kills. Hailee Tanner led all players with 32 assists. Desert Hills remains undefeated at 6-0 (3-0). Pine View drops to 14-9 (1-2). On Thursday, Pine View will travel to Cedar. Desert Hills will go to Snow Canyon in the battle of region unbeatens to determine sole possession of first place.

Hurricane 3 Cedar 0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-19)

Cedar made the trip to Hurricane with both teams seeking their first win in region. The Tigers proved too much for the Lady Reds, taking the match in straight sets, 25-19, 25-20, 25-19.

hurricane-smcedar-smIn the first set, the two teams stayed close through the first part of the game. Both teams gave up points through service errors. Hurricane began to pull away after the teams had knotted it at 11-11. Carrie Marshall got five straight service points.

“We have really concentrated on cutting down on our service errors,” said Hurricane coach Nicole Koehler. “We stress to our girls that if we have just had a service error, the next person needs to get her serve in.”

After suffering through five service errors in the opening 10 serves of the first set, the Tigers only had two more the rest of the night with 11 aces. Hurricane took that cushion to the end winning the first set 25-19.

The second set saw the teams stay close throughout. Hurricane took the early lead and never gave it up, but Cedar stayed within 1-2 points until the score read 17-15. Carrie Marshall once again got three points on serve to increase the lead to five. It was enough as Hurricane finished the second set 25-20. The three seniors for Hurricane, Marshall, Ellie McDonald and Morgan Huntsman, all had timely kills at the end of the set.

“We have been working hard on serve and receive,” said McDonald. “That was the key tonight and I think our improvement showed.”

The third set saw Hurricane grab its biggest lead of the night 21-12. After a timeout from Cedar coach Nicole Anglin, Cedar cut into the lead but could get no closer than five points before succumbing 25-19.

“It is hard to see the positives in a loss,” said Anglin. “But we have been focusing on playing one point at a time without thinking of the end result of the match. Tonight the girls did that. They played better.”

Individually, Marshall had eight kills while McDonald, Sierra Davis, and Huntsman had six each. McDonald also had four blocks.

“It was nice to get our first win in region,” said Marshall. “I was on the team that won state two years ago. It has been difficult being the senior leader on this team after that experience. But helping in the development of the younger players and getting some wins along the way feels great. Our hard work is finally paying off.”

For Cedar, Ashley Vanfleet had 13 digs and 12 kills. Hannah Williams had nine digs. Kylie Field led the team with 18 assists.

Hurricane moves to 2-6, 1-2 in region play. Cedar falls to 7-6 (0-3). On Thursday Hurricane will host the Dixie Flyers while Cedar will host Pine View.
