Ivins Pioneer, Heritage Days combine into ‘One Big Event’

IVINS — Pioneer Days and Heritage Days have been combined this year to make “One Big Event” this weekend at Ivins City Park. The fun starts Friday afternoon and goes through Saturday night.

The city combined what has previously been two separate events into the all new “One Big Event” for several reasons, Parks and Recreation Director Benny Sorensen said; they wanted to avoid the summer heat and they wanted to choose a date that didn’t conflict with Days of ’47.

“This is the first time we’ve moved everything over,” Sorensen said, “so we’re hoping it goes over well … we hope it turns out.”

Friday events start with bike safety check from 3-6 p.m., Mayor’s Walk at 6:30 p.m., root beer floats at 7:30, and movie in the park playing “Big Hero 6” at 8 p.m.

Saturday starts with options.  At 7 a.m., you can go for a Heritage Days bike ride to Tuacahn and back, or you can hike the face of Red Mountain. The bike ride is about 8 miles round trip while the hike is expected to take about 4 hours round trip.

Note: Hiking Red Mountain is described in the registration materials as “a rugged, steep climb that begins at the bottom of the mountain, continues up through the cliffs and to the top where there are spectacular views of Ivins and the surrounding area. The route is extremely strenuous and is suitable only for persons in good physical condition and who are not afraid of heights.”  Register online for the bike ride or the hike.

If biking and hiking doesn’t suit you, there’s always breakfast – at 7:30 a.m. sponsored by Ivins’ finest – the volunteer firefighters.

The parade starts at 9 a.m. followed by vendors, games and entertainment in the park from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. A highlight of the event is the much anticipated Soap Box Derby which starts at 10:30 a.m. – one you’ll want to come out and cheer for and applaud those who take pride in their own homemade racers.

As Ivins celebrates its heritage, Sorensen said, the activities are fun for all and everyone is encouraged to come out to Ivins this weekend, no matter what city they’re from.
