Flash flood warning issued for 3 Southern Utah counties; updated 4 p.m.

SOUTHERN UTAH – The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City has issued a flash flood warning for southwestern Garfield County and central Kane County, effective until 4:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Additionally, flash flood warnings were issued at 3:42 p.m. for west central Kane County and east central Washington County. The flash flood warning for these two areas is in effect until 7:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Garfield County, central Kane County

As of 2:43 p.m. Tuesday, ongoing flooding in the Paria drainage was en route to the Paria Narrows at the Utah/Arizona border.

Thunderstorms are currently moving through the area. The Paria River is flowing at 1,500 cubic feet per minute.

West central Kane County, east central Washington County

As of 3:40 p.m., light to moderate rainfall is moving into Zion National Park. This area has experienced copious amounts of rainfall in the past 24 hours and conditions are saturated.

Additionally, rivers and streams throughout the park are elevated. It is inferred that the additional rainfall will swell these waterways to dangerous levels.

Locations that will experience flooding include: Zion National Park, Springdale and Rockville.

Excessive rain continues in these two areas.

Precautionary/preparedness actions

Move to higher ground now. Act quickly to protect your life.

Turn around. Don’t drown.

If you are traveling in these areas, be aware of flash flooding and avoid any washes and dry slots.

Remain alert for flooding even in locations not receiving rain. Dry washes, streams and rivers can become raging killer currents in a matter of minutes, even from distant rainfall.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway.  The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely.
