ST. GEORGE — A water main break under a St.George street closed 100 South between 600 East and 700 East Sunday night, sending water cascading onto residents’ property and causing damage to the road before the water could be shut off.
Authorities were notified around 6:20 p.m. that water was coming out from under the street near the St. George City Cemetery.
The St. George Fire Department was quickly notified as was the Water Services Department, but by the time they arrived, there was a large hole in the asphalt about mid-block.
Water was bubbling through the hole as it rushed down 100 South and, at several points before the water was shut off, large pieces of asphalt collapsed into the hole, enlarging it further.
The asphalt had buckled and bulged in about a 100-foot radius around the breakage as well.
Residents on the south side of the street were seen with brooms and shovels trying to channel the water away from their homes.
The water was finally shut off about 6:55 p.m. and further damage to the street was minimized.
The water department barricaded the street to find the broken main and replace it.
A water department employee said they would work through the night to get water restored to the neighborhood and reopen the street. He estimated that the street would be repaired sufficiently to drive on by Monday morning, but urged caution while driving through the area until permanent repairs can be made.
