CEDAR CITY — A lightning strike lit a tree on fire just north of Three Peaks Shooting Range Sunday afternoon, spreading to about a quarter-acre in size and causing the shooting range to be shut down.

Dixie National Fire Service Firefighter Jeremy Gerber said they received a report of a fire around 3 p.m. and initially responded to the shooting range.

The Forest Service decided to evacuate the range as a safety precaution, Gerber said, and had the range secured by 4 p.m.

While the fire took out a few Cedar trees, Gerber said, there was no significant damage as a result of the fire.

“The washes acted as a natural fuel barrier,” he said.

With the fire out, the range is expected to reopen within a few hours.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
