ST. GEORGE Tabernacle Street in St. George was closed for a short time Tuesday due to a water pipe breaking, which caused the road to buckle in two different places.

Just after 5 p.m., the St. George Fire Department responded to water running across Tabernacle Street where a pipe broke between 900 East and 1000 East, St. George Fire Chief Robert Stoker said. The breakage caused the road to lift and buckle in two different places.

“Some of these older pipes … just get to where … a joint will come loose or a connection, or it (will) split,” Stoker said.

The water has been shut off. Evans Hairstyling College on Tabernacle Street receives its water from the main pipeline that broke, he said. The college will be without water until the pipe is fixed.

What caused the pipeline to break is still under investigation.

“Until they dig it up, we won’t know what actually happened to it,” Stoker said.

The road is now open and the lanes are diverted around the breakage. The road should be fixed on Wednesday, he said.
