LANCASTER, Calif. – The Dixie State women’s soccer team opened its 2015 campaign with a road victory against Antelope Valley University 2-0.

dsulogoAlexis Torres scored just past the 10-minute mark. Forward Jasmine Arollo laid it into the middle third. Torres took the shot from 35 yards out and hit the goal in the upper left corner just over the outstretched hands of Pioneer goalkeeper Canelle Hendershot.

Kaisa Rogers scored the second goal in the second half at the 60:16 mark. She was assisted by Tori Washington. Midfielder Tana Singley made a cross from the right side. Washington mishit the ball directing it to Rogers. Rogers found the right side of the net from six yards out.

“Our scoring attacks today came from our midfield,” said Dixie head coach Kacey Bingham. “When we can get that production there and combine that with our talent up front we will be dangerous.”

The defense kept the Antelope Valley attack at bay as the Pioneers only got three shots on goal. Stacie Gubler was the goalkeeper in the first half when all of the shots on goal were attempted. She combine with her replacement in the second half, Danica Nusink, for the shutout.

“Our defense played well,” said Bingham. “But we controlled the ball at their end for most of the game and that also limited their shots on goal.”

Not totally satisfied with her team’s play, Bingham did see room for improvement. “We had 20 shots total. But we need to get more dangerous shots.”

Dixie played a total of 22 players in the match. “We have a long road trip with four matches,” said Bingham. “I told the girls that no one was going to play 90 minutes. What is great about this team is we have great depth. Our talent and energy level does not go down with our substitutions.”

Dixie State continues its road trip on Tuesday at 11 a.m. (PT), when they will face Cal State San Bernardino.
