Red Rock Singers present ‘A Little Night Music’

CEDAR CITY — Cedar City’s acclaimed choir, Red Rock Singers, has been working on a little music lately … “A Little Night Music,” that is. They will perform an end-of-summer concert Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Thorley Recital Hall in Southern Utah University’s Music Building.

This concert focuses on music about night, from darkness and the moon to nighttime festivities and the coming of dawn. The title comes from Mozart’s “Eine kleine Nachtmusik,” one of the most well-known orchestra pieces of all time, which Red Rock Singers will “choralize” at the end of the concert.

The evening will have something for everyone, from choral classics, like Eric Whitaker’s “Water Night,” and Morten Lauridsen’s “O Nata Lux,” to popular numbers by Lionel Richie and Fred Parris. The choir will even mix in a little barbershop, gospel spirituals and doo-wop.

“The diversity of this music and its level of difficulty truly displays the flexibility and the high level of talent we have in the choir,” Keith Bradshaw, conductor and co-founder, said, noting that many of the pieces in this concert are unaccompanied, challenging and very demanding. “We are very proud to strive for such quality and hope the community enjoys our music.”

As an open-audition group, Red Rock Singers welcomes vocalists who enjoy challenging and musically gratifying repertoire. Following their debut concert this past spring, there was a great response from many who were interested in joining the group and wanted to get to work right away.

“While most music groups in the community take a break during the summer months, we decided to continue with the momentum we had going,” Steven Meredith, assistant conductor, said. “It has been a fantastic way to spend the summer.”

Audiences will enjoy the varied selections of “A Little Night Music.” Suggested admission donation is $5.

While families are welcome, it is recommended that children be older than 6.
