Police respond to possible gunfire incident

ST. GEORGE – Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a disturbance in the area of 600 South and 500 East in St. George Saturday night that may have involved gunfire.

“At approximately 10:30 this evening the St. George Communications Center received some calls regarding the sound of shots fired,” St. George Police Capt. Mike Giles said. “There was a woman in the street requesting help, trying to contact neighbors for assistance.”

An initial statement on the incident released by the St. George Police Department said the woman may have fled the house after shots were fired inside, lending to the possibility of the incident being domestic violence-related. The man who allegedly fired the shots remained in the home with several children.

Witnesses confirmed to officers arriving at the scene that they had also heard the sound of shots fired.

“The on-call negotiations team and SWAT team were contacted to respond to assist with the issue,” Giles said.

Contact was quickly made with the home’s occupants and they were instructed to go outside. They all complied and investigators began discussing the situation with them.

There was no confrontation with officers on scene and no one was injured. The situation stabilized shortly thereafter and extra police units gradually began to be released from the scene.

During the course of the incident, police blocked access to 500 East from 700 South to 500 South as a precautionary measure.

Investigators were still on scene shortly after midnight trying to determine exactly what happened and whether or not there was actually any gunfire. The investigation is ongoing.

“This is the best resolution we could hope for in a situation like this,” St. George Police posted on its Facebook page following the incident. “We are pleased with the response of our patrol officers and are thankful for the compliance from the residents.”

Anyone with information about the disturbance on 500 East is asked to contact the St. George Police Department at 435-627-4300, referencing incident No. 15p020412.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
