Veterans Aware: Upcoming opportunities for vets, military personnel

ST. GEORGE — There are several opportunities available to veterans in Southern Utah, including a diver certification opportunity, stand down event and case lot sale.

Fresh water diver certification

Dixie Divers in St. George will provide six full paid scholarships to disabled veterans to become fresh water diving certified. The scholarships include all equipment, classroom and live fire instruction at Sand Hollow Reservoir in Sand Hollow State Park.

Diving, among other water activities, has proven to have considerable value for post-traumatic stress disorder, military sexual trauma, traumatic brain injuries, and other service-connected traumatic experiences. Hydrotherapy has also shown measurable results in pain reduction and management.

To participate, send an email with your contact information, a brief description of your military service, the nature of your disability and what you are hope to achieve through this program. Send the email by Sept. 8 to be considered for a scholarship.

Nellis Air Force Base case lot sale

The Commissary of Nellis Air Force Base will be coming to St. George for a case lot sale, Sept. 11, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sept. 12, 9 a.m.-noon at the Army Reserve Building located at 3323 East Deseret Drive, St. George (over by the Costco area). You must have valid ID with commissary privileges. People authorized for commissary privileges include:

  • Persons with 100 percent disability in connection with military service | You will have received a letter advising you of your eligibility, take this letter to the National Guard Armory in Cedar City on any Wednesday to get a commissary identification card
  • On active duty with a valid Department of Defense identification card
  • A member of the guard and reserve including ready reserve, selected reserve, individual ready reserve, inactive national guard, guard and reserve retirees and their authorized family members

You can pick up a schedule of what kinds of case lot items will be on sale, instructions about “special orders,” and more information about eligibility by dropping by the St. George Vet Center, Dixie Commons Business Park, 1664 S. Dixie Drive, building C, Suite 102 in St. George, or telephone 435-673-4494.

Stand down event

On Oct. 17 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Mayor’s Veteran Advisory Council and the Switchpoint Community Resource Center will be holding a stand down, conducted to give aid and attendance to homeless or seriously deprived veterans.

As with all stand downs, this event will include medical physicals, dental check-ups, a legal clinic, Veterans Affairs health care enrollment, Veterans Affairs disability claim assistance, breakfast and dinner, showers and laundry service.

The stand down will be held at Switchpoint, 948 North 1300 West in St. George. Volunteers will be present, in abundance, to assist and support the participants.

The Mayor’s Veteran Advisory Council and Switchpoint ask that those in need drop by, all processes and participation is completely voluntary and without proof of identity or need. The program is intended to provide aid and attendance to those veterans in need and is extended based on honor and goodwill. Telephone 435-627-4663 for more information.
