LDS church keeps Boy Scout program

SALT LAKE CITY — In a statement released Wednesday morning, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reiterated its support of the Boy Scouts of America program.

“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints appreciates the positive contributions Scouting has made over the years to thousands of its young men and boys and to thousands of other youth,” the statement from the church’s First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said. “As leaders of the Church, we want the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to succeed in its historic mission to instill leadership skills and high moral standards in youth of all faiths and circumstances, thereby equipping them for greater success in life and valuable service to their country.”

The decision is seen as something of a surprise, as the leaders of the LDS church said they were “deeply troubled” after the Boy Scouts lifted their ban on gay adult leaders on July 14, and suggested that the church might start their own organization.

“There is a need for scouting,” the LDS-BSA Relations Director in Utah, Mark Francis, said. “This now gives us an opportunity in the church to continue to share the value of Scouting with millions.”

Mormon leaders have softened their tone about gays and lesbians in recent years. Church leaders were involved in legislation enacted in Utah in March that extended nondiscrimination protections to gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people.

But those leaders have also made it clear that the church still opposes gay marriage and believes homosexual activity is a sin.

A number of rank-and-file Mormons are pushing the church to become more accepting and welcoming of LGBT members to avoid losing them from the religion or being shunned. Groups have formed to represent the movement, including a coalition of Mormon mothers whose children are gay and lesbian.

After the Mormons, the next largest sponsors of U.S. Scout units are the United Methodist Church and the Roman Catholic Church. The Methodists’ General Commission on United Methodist Men has said decisions on whether or not to accept gay adult leaders would rest with individual churches.

Catholic Bishop Robert Guglielmone of Charleston, South Carolina — who helps oversee Catholic scouting programs — said he and his colleagues were cautiously optimistic that ties with the Boy Scouts could be maintained even though the church is wary of accepting adult leaders who are open about being gay.

The LDS church position going forward was given in the church’s press release:

At this time, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will go forward as a chartering organization of BSA, and as in the past, will appoint Scout leaders and volunteers who uphold and exemplify Church doctrine, values, and standards.

The Associated Press contributed to this article.

When will they support Girl Scouts?!

    • Brian August 26, 2015 at 1:06 pm

Thankfully they don’t support girl scouts (ie. the activity arm of planned parenthood) and never will. For my values the girls scouts is an abomination. It is very pro-LGBT, promotes abortion, promotes sexual exploration at about any age, and is very PC. I’ll never give a dime to girl scout cookies, no matter how tasty they are.

      • fun bag August 26, 2015 at 1:47 pm

Bryan? Do those girls scout ‘pro abortion troopers’ also support UN agenda 21??? I forget if its u or NATIVE the keeps going on and on about agenda 21……ahahahah
        ..
” promotes abortion, promotes sexual exploration at about any age “… source pls…??????

        • Brian August 27, 2015 at 8:28 am

Here’s a direct source: http:://ippf.org/system/files/healthy_happy_hot.pdf “Healthy Happy and Hot” is widely promoted by Planned Parenthood and in many GSUSA units. Go ahead and read that entire document and tell me you think that’s what 10 year old girls in the US should be taught. Don’t miss page 7, it’s extra special! Even if it isn’t promoted in local units, is that who you want your cookie money supporting? Really?

          • sagemoon August 27, 2015 at 8:50 am

“Wowzers!” as they would say in the UK. First of all, this is a UK website, not a US website. Second, the document is an assist to people living with HIV. Third, you are out of your mind if you think this website has any relevance to the topic at hand.

          • Brian August 27, 2015 at 9:26 am

Waco’s Bluebonnet Girl Scout Council (in Waco Texas, not the Waco UK) has partnered with Planned Parenthood to sponsor “Nobody’s Fool”, a program for 5th grade to 9th grade girls that ran for 24 years. Every girl was given a copy of that exact document. Fortunately “Nobody’s Fool” has been abandoned in Waco, thanks to vigilant community members. If it’s happening in Waco Texas, do you really think it isn’t happening in places like New York, DC, Chicago, etc? Read page 7 and tell me it’s “just a document for people with HIV”. Keep your head in the sand if you choose.

          • fun bag August 27, 2015 at 9:29 am

“Healthy, Happy and Hot: A young people’s guide to rights

            Download
A guide for young people living with HIV to help them understand their sexual rights, and live healthy, fun, happy and sexually fulfilling lives.”

I guess sage beat me to it. Please tell me you’re not this dumb, Brian…

          • fun bag August 27, 2015 at 9:33 am

and does this even mention girl scouts? what does the GSA have to do with HIV programs??????? here’s a working link for others http://www.ippf.org/resource/Healthy-Happy-and-Hot-young-peoples-guide-rights

          • fun bag August 27, 2015 at 9:36 am

I think Bri has gone off the deep end into full blown kook territory. Your credibility is almost completely gone if you ever had any, brian…

          • Brian August 27, 2015 at 9:54 am

Fun Bag: Nice investigation. Seriously, that was amazing. You’ve determined conclusively that “Healthy Happy and Hot” doesn’t actually use the worlds “girl scout” and therefore couldn’t possibly be used by them. You should be a journalist for MSNBC, you’d be perfect!

          • 42214 August 27, 2015 at 10:38 am

Brian, it would be a good thing if GSA Utah chapter hooked up with Planned Parenthood. It would cut down on the unwanted Mormon births.

          • fun bag August 27, 2015 at 10:54 am

BRIAN! WHY WOULD THE GIRL SCOUTS BE USING HIV AIDS HANDBOOKS? PROVIDE A CREDIBLE SOURCE OR YOU’RE JUST PLAIN NUTS! AHAHAH

          • Brian August 27, 2015 at 12:14 pm

Is the Washington Times credible enough for you? http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/mar/18/girl-scout-sex-guide/ I know its not quite as liberal as MSNBC or HuffPo, but hopefully it’s liberal enough to register on your “credible meter”. Pay special attention to the part where parents were escorted out of the room first. Awesome values! Solid organization. Please, seriously, take my daughters and raise them right.

          • Brian August 27, 2015 at 12:31 pm

There are plenty of other sources: http://www.standforthefamily.org/sff/girl_scouts_message.cfm http://www.cwfa.org/girls-scouts-under-fire-for-planned-parenthood-sex-guide/ http://cnsnews.com/news/article/pelosi-girl-scouts-relationship-planned-parenthood-very-valuable And googling “girl scouts hot healthy happy” will show you plenty more. Read up on it or don’t, but it has been promoted to girl scouts when they were at functions as a girl scout group. GSUSA now denies they have anything to do with Planned Parenthood (since PP has become a lightning rod in the news) or ever has, which is a blatant lie, since they’ve bragged up the relationship in the past.

          • Simone August 27, 2015 at 2:19 pm

Brian Your sources, hold zero credibility. The Washington Time source is an OPINION written by Austin Ruse who, according to the article you mentioned is “…the President of the New York and Washington, D.C.-based Catholic Family & Human Rights Institute (C-FAM), a research institute that focuses exclusively on international social policy”. Im sure his intent in writing this article was be as unbiased as he could.

The second “StandfortheFamily.org” is hosted by ‘Family Watch International whose entire mission statement consists of “Preserve and promote the family, based on marriage between a man and a woman as the societal unit that provides the best outcome for men, women and children”. No, they aren’t biased at all.

The third is “Concerned Women for America” whose mission statement is this: “The mission of CWA is to protect and promote Biblical values among all citizens — first through prayer, then education, and finally by influencing our society — thereby reversing the decline in moral values in our nation. – See more at: http://www.cwfa.org/about/vision-mission/#sthash.Ffr8VK4S.dpuf“. Obviously this organization is unbiased as well

The fourth was the most fun cnsnews.com states the following on it’s site “CNSNews.com was launched on June 16, 1998 as a news source for individuals, news organizations and broadcasters who put a higher premium on balance than spin and seek news that’s ignored or under-reported as a result of media bias by omission.

Study after study by the Media Research Center, the parent organization of CNSNews.com, clearly demonstrate a liberal bias in many news outlets – bias by commission and bias by omission – that results in a frequent double-standard in editorial decisions on what constitutes “news.”” Their parent company “Media Research Center” states ” MRC’s sole mission is to expose and neutralize the propaganda arm of the Left: the national news media”. Like the others you mentioned, I’m sure they thoroughly researched both sides of the issue before writing about it.

I have an idea Brian why don’t you post something from the GSA? What about studies done by universities? heck at this point I would accept sources that aren’t openly conservative sources that have mission statements like “The mission of CWA is to protect and promote Biblical values among all citizens — first through prayer, then education, and finally by influencing our society — thereby reversing the decline in moral values in our nation”. of course that would mean that you might have to check out *gasp* a source that is not openly conservative and biased!and we all know that you wouldn’t be caught dead doing that. I mean, what would the other teabaggers say?

          • GrandmaB August 27, 2015 at 8:50 pm

Brian, I went to that site. You are a liar. And stupid for repeating something you can’t prove. I was expecting some more major editing the way the GOP panderers did to the last so called scandal.

          • Bender August 27, 2015 at 9:45 pm

Brian confusing Washington Times with Washington Post.

      • sagemoon August 26, 2015 at 2:33 pm

There you go again. I have no idea where you got this information you are stating as fact but you are full of BS. I was a Girl Scout. You need to shut up when it comes to topics you know nothing about. Your opinions are disgraceful, your words show you to be a sexist pig, and I have no respect for you.

        • DR.P August 26, 2015 at 5:19 pm

That explains it. No wonder you are so screwed up…

      • sagemoon August 26, 2015 at 3:22 pm

By the way, Brian, did you know today is Women’s Equality Day? On this day in 1920, women won the right to vote.

        • Simone August 26, 2015 at 4:43 pm

          YEP!
“I think the girl who is able to earn her own living and pay her own way should be as happy as anybody on earth. The sense of independence and security is very sweet”.

        • NotSoFast August 26, 2015 at 4:49 pm

WOW, Thanks Sagemoon. I didn’t know that
No mention of it on my calendar. There should be a law against omissions.

        • Dexter August 26, 2015 at 7:50 pm

SAGE don’t waste your time with that idiot Brian.. He has his head stuck in his depends. and I always donate space to the Girl Scout Cookie program to set up their booths and storage..

          • sagemoon August 26, 2015 at 8:32 pm

Thank you for supporting the GSA.

          • Real Life August 26, 2015 at 10:12 pm

Don’t let him fool you Sage. “Dexter” is not to be allowed around children. For obvious reasons.

          • Dexter August 26, 2015 at 11:16 pm

SAGE don’t pay attention to REAL LIFE VILLAGE IDIOT he hates me. LOL. like I care…. Yawwwwwn

        • Brian August 27, 2015 at 8:33 am

I did know that and enjoyed reading up on it. Did you know that Utah helped lead the way on giving women the right to vote? Not once, but twice (since the federal government shut it down, until Utah put it in the Utah Constitution to reinstate it).

          • AnnieMated August 28, 2015 at 5:08 pm

You know Brian, Utah helping to give women the right to vote reminds me of that time Hitler gave the Jews a city. He even had a movie made about it.

It also reminds me of the time that God told Spencer Kimball that he had officially changed his mind about black people.

      • Chris August 26, 2015 at 3:34 pm

Your statement is a complete fiction and is an indicator of the sources you draw from on the internet. Any intelligent person knows those sources are crackpot web sites, but of course, you could hardly be included in the intelligent category.

        • Brian August 27, 2015 at 8:29 am

Chris, read this from beginning to end: http:://ippf.org/system/files/healthy_happy_hot.pdf If you don’t think PP and GSUSA have an agenda, you’re misinformed and naive.

          • GrandmaB August 27, 2015 at 8:52 pm

Again, check your sources before you flaunt them. Kinda stupid to do it twice.

    • GrandmaB August 27, 2015 at 9:23 pm

Brian, this is for you. I pulled up the Planned Parenthood site you keep going on and on about. It is an article that is specifically aimed at people with HIV. How to live healthy, happy and sexual lives. Hence the term HOT. This is exactly the same kind of crap the GOP did with those tapes, they edit, they lie, do everything they can to accomplish their aim. The lying bothers me. If you can’t accomplish your political or religious goals without lying, maybe you should change your plan. Because you are the scum of the earth by trying to win by lying. It means you shouldn’t win.

  • Brian August 26, 2015 at 12:10 pm

You left out a very important part of the release: “With equal concern for the substantial number of youth who live outside the United States and Canada, the Church will continue to evaluate and refine program options that better meet its global needs.”. Regis Philbin: “Is that your final answer?” Church: “Not necessarily”. I’ll support Scouting 100% as long as the Church stays aligned with it. But as much as I love Scouting (aims, ideals, values), I’m not a fan of the BSA (2/3 of it is BS, after all), and will gladly leave when the time comes.

    • Simone August 26, 2015 at 4:52 pm

“I’ll support Scouting 100% as long as the Church stays aligned with it” Is it just me or does that statement seem a little fascist?

      • sagemoon August 26, 2015 at 5:45 pm

        It’s not just you, Simone.

      • GrandmaB August 27, 2015 at 8:54 pm

Nope, it isn’t just you. I know the church has ideas of ruling this country someday. They really believe that they are the only ones who can. Kinda scary.

  • fun bag August 26, 2015 at 12:43 pm

Wouldn’t putting a homosexual scout master in charge of a bunch of little boys be like having the fox guard the hen house?

    • native born new mexican August 26, 2015 at 4:26 pm

This time I agree with you fun bag.

    • voice of reason August 26, 2015 at 8:00 pm

This is one of the most ignorant things I have ever read. There is no link whatsoever between homosexuality and pedophilia. None.

      • ladybugavenger August 26, 2015 at 8:12 pm

        Not yet

      • fun bag August 26, 2015 at 8:25 pm

Doesn’t need to be. It’s the same reason we don’t let a grown man be a girl scout leader… 🙂

      • fun bag August 26, 2015 at 8:26 pm

I think you’re experiencing gender confusion, FB

    • GrandmaB August 27, 2015 at 8:56 pm

In fact, all pedophiles are proud heterosexuals. Even the men who prey on little boys. Fancy that! Finding a pedophile that would even claim to be gay would be like finding gold, in blocks, in your backyard.

  • GrandmaB August 26, 2015 at 4:49 pm

To Laura Schlessinger, Radio Talk Show Host
    Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God’s Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination… end of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God’s Laws and how to follow them.
    1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighbouring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians?
    2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
    3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual unseemliness – Lev. 15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.
    4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord – Lev. 1:9. The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
    5. I have a neighbour who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2. clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?
    6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination – Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this? Are there ‘degrees’ of abomination?
    7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?
    8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
    9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
    10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev. 24:10-16. Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help.

Thank you again for reminding us that God’s word is eternal and unchanging.

    Your adoring fan,

    James M. Kauffman, Ed. D.

          • GrandmaB August 27, 2015 at 9:04 pm

I will apologize to you to BAG of FUN. For the same problem that Dr. Pee has. Too short an attention span. I should never have posted anything so long. And yes, I do copy and paste. A great tool the iNets gives you.
            9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves? I betcha anything you played football. You unclean freak.

        • GrandmaB August 27, 2015 at 9:01 pm

I do want to apologize. Anything longer that 15 words confuse you?

      • GrandmaB August 27, 2015 at 8:59 pm

Yes, I do. Only the really dumb ones won’t. LOL, I would think it would be very informative for all you out there who are true Christians. After all, it gives you so many more people to judge and hate and condemn. So, Dr. Pee, which do you think is the worse abomination, being gay or eating shell fish. Both require the death of the accused. And both are considered an abomination.

    • sagemoon August 26, 2015 at 5:44 pm

      Ha, ha, ha!

      • GrandmaB August 27, 2015 at 9:11 pm

42214, I don’t subscribe to the biblical crap. I posted it to point out how incredibly stupid believing anything in the bible can be. And using a portion of the BS that comes out of it as an excuse to hate people, to shun them, to make them less than you because they are different, is just an excuse. To even kill them. I get you think you were being clever. You weren’t. Just stupid.

        • 42214 August 27, 2015 at 11:26 pm
