ST. GEORGE — Rush hour traffic was backed up on Interstate 15 in St. George Tuesday evening as emergency crews battled a vehicle fire.
Just before 5:30 p.m., the St. George Fire Department responded to reports of a vehicle fire on southbound I-15 near milepost 7, where a Ford Bronco II was fully engulfed in flames.
The fire started in the engine compartment of the Bronco, St. George Fire Battalion Chief Darren Imlay said.
Because the wind was blowing so hard at the time of the incident, the fire moved quickly into the passenger area of the Bronco, Imlay said.
The driver of the Bronco was able to get out of the vehicle safely and remove some of his belongings before the Bronco became fully engulfed.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
Once the Fire Department arrived, crews were able to extinguish the fire fairly quickly, Imlay said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation as this report is published.
Traffic on I-15 was diverted to one lane while responders from the St. George Fire Department and Utah Highway Patrol attended to the incident.
The Bronco was a total loss and had to be towed from the scene.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
