WASHINGTON COUNTY — Being distracted by her cellphone while driving Sunday evening proved to be an expensive lesson for a northern Utah woman after her car drifted over the Interstate 15 centerline and into the guardrail.
Around 7 p.m., a woman, driving a white Honda Civic south on I-15 between mileposts 34 and 35, became distracted by her cellphone, Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Lars Gardner said.
“(She) drifted towards the guardrail, overcorrected, tried to fix the overcorrection and ended up crashing into the guardrail,” Gardner said. “She originally came to rest in the lanes of travel. Some folks stopped and helped her push her car out of the way.”
The Honda Civic sustained major damage, but Gardner said the car did what it was designed to do in case of a crash.
The vehicle’s airbags deployed and the woman walked away from the crash with only minor bruises.
Gardner said the woman would be issued a citation for multiple traffic offenses as a result of the collision but did not specify which ones.
The crash had no significant affect on traffic flow along the Interstate.
Units from the Utah Highway Patrol and Leeds Fire and Rescue responded to the incident.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
