Woman arrested for felony theft alleges she received stolen car from family

WASHINGTON CITY – A Washington City woman was arrested Monday and charged with a second-degree felony after she allegedly stole a car from a dealership lot, telling acquaintances that a family member had given it to her.

On Aug. 3, officers responded to a report of a vehicle theft at Robert Judd Auto Sales, located at 140 W. Telegraph St. in Washington, where a 1992 Mitsubishi had reportedly been stolen from the lot, according to a probable cause statement filed by the Washington City Police Department in support of the arrest.

Two witnesses told police that 26-year-old Elizabeth June Cox had stolen the Mitsubishi, according to the statement, and driven it to another location in Washington City.

“They indicated Elizabeth told them a family member bought her the vehicle,” the arresting officer wrote in the probable cause statement.

One of the witnesses also told police he was with Cox when she broke into another vehicle, a white Ford truck, and stole a flashlight.

On Aug. 4, officers received a report that the stolen Mitsubishi had been recovered in Las Vegas.

Two additional witnesses also placed the stolen Mitsubishi in Cox’s possession and said she told them a family member gave it to her, as well.

Cox was arrested and booked into the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility.

She was charged with a second-degree felony for theft of a motor vehicle and a class A misdemeanor for burglary of a vehicle.

Judge G. Michael Westfall, of the 5th District Court, ordered $11,950 bail for Cox’s release pending trial during her initial court appearance Tuesday. She was found indigent by the court and will be represented by court-appointed attorney Jay Winward.

Utah court records show Cox was also arrested in July for possession of another’s identifying documents.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
