At about 4:09 p.m., the Hurricane City Police Department responded to reports of an accident at 1150 W. State St., at the intersection near Lin’s Market, McDonald’s restaurant and Mountain America Credit Union.

The crash involved a silver 2006 GMC Sierra truck driven by a 36-year-old man. The truck was traveling west on State Street approaching the intersection of 1150 West. A gray 2000 Pontiac Bonneville car, driven by a 51-year-old woman, was traveling south on 1150 West approaching the intersection.

“Both vehicles entered the intersection at the same time,” Hurricane City Police Sgt. Brandon Buell said.

The two vehicles collided in the intersection.

The crash is under investigation, and it is not known as this report is published why the two vehicles entered the intersection simultaneously or how the crash occurred.

Responders had to use the Jaws of Life to remove the woman in the Pontiac from her vehicle. She was taken by ambulance to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George in critical condition and later died as a result of her injuries.

The man driving the truck was also transported to the hospital but in stable condition.

Neither vehicle was carrying any passengers.

“Our hearts go out to the families involved; this is such a tragic incident,” a press release from the Hurricane City Police Department said.

Multiple agencies were brought in to assist with the accident, Buell said. The Utah Highway Patrol is assisting with the investigation to help put details together regarding how the crash occurred.

In addition to the Hurricane City Police Department and UHP, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, LaVerkin City Police Department, Hurricane Valley Fire and Utah Department of Transportation responded to the scene, Buell said.

Eastbound traffic was blocked completely on State Street and diverted around the accident for about an hour-and-a-half as the scene was attended to.

The name of the woman killed has not yet been released by authorities.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

If the pickup driver did run the light and kill the woman this would be negligent homicide with a mandatory jail term. With an intersection this busy there should be several witnesses that can come forward. We can assume one of the two drivers was twiddling with an iphone or similar…
